History of Antibiotics

pills

It all started with penicillin, invented by Alexander Fleming.

Although penicillin was invented in 1928, the first commercial antibiotic was Prontosil, a sulfonamide created by Gerhard Domagk. Antibiotics weren't widely used until a decade later, due to impurities in the antibiotics and people being able to mass-produce them. Most antibiotics that we know of today were invented between 1940 and 1962. After the "golden age" of antibiotics, few antibiotics were invented, and antibiotic-resistant bacteria started appearing. Now that there are an increasing amount of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, new solutions are being made to combat these so-called "superbugs" for the two million people who get infected with them.
